TULSA, Okla. – Oklahoma men's tennis player Alex Ghilea advanced to the second round of the qualifying singles draw at the ITA All-American Championship in Tulsa, Okla., by winning its opening match on Monday.
Ghilea, a sophomore, defeated Adam Steryous of Furman 6-4, 6-2 in the first round of the qualifying singles draw. He will now face Quentin Monaghan of Notre Dame in round two at 11 a.m. Tuesday.
“Alex played a great match today,” associate head coach Bo Hodge said. “He was very consistent from start to finish. He has another tough match tomorrow. I'm excited about what I've seen so far.”
Ghilea needs two more wins to earn a spot in the main singles draw, scheduled to start Thursday. No. 3 ranked junior Axel Alvarez, No. 14 ranked senior Dane Webb and 40th ranked sophomore Andrew Harris were all pre-selected for the main singles draw.
Play in the qualifying doubles draw is also slated to begin on Tuesday. Oklahoma will enter two pairs, Alvarez and Webb as well as Ghilea and redshirt senior Nick Papac.
