September 28, 2014 | Women's Tennis
The Oklahoma women's tennis team posted a 7-1 singles record to close out the Northwestern Invite Sunday and sophomore Ann Pepper won the consolation round of the black flight.
Pepper won the consolation of the black flight by defeating Bianca Zuzu of Illinois-Chicago 6-1, 6-2. Pepper finished with a 4-1 singles record on the weekend. The Sooners finished with a 20-15 overall singles record over the three-day invite.
“Today was definitely better and I'm happy for the girls that they could pick up some wins today,” said head coach Dave Mullins. “This weekend showed us that we have a lot of work to do going forward and that we cannot take anyone lightly.”
Freshman Brooke Withrow also continued her success into Sunday. She defeated Maria Paula Ribero of Eastern Michigan 6-4, 6-2 to also finish 4-1 for the weekend.
The duo of sophomore Morgan Chumney and freshman Christie Brigante continued their doubles success as well. They defeated Olivia Myers and Tracy Kuhle of Western Michigan 8-5 to finish 3-1 for the weekend.
The Sooners finished with a doubles record of 8-7 for the tournament.
“We are more beat up than usual for it being so early in the year,” said Mullins. “We need to get healthier this week and then get back to work to prepare for the remainder of the fall season.”
The Sooners will be back in action Oct. 16-19 at the USTA/ITA Regionals in Stillwater, Okla.
