Papac and Ghilea Advance in Qualifying Draw

TULSA, Okla. – The Oklahoma men's tennis team advanced two players to the third round of the pre-qualifying singles draw at the ITA All-American Championship Saturday in Tulsa, Okla.

Sophomore Alex Ghilea won one match on Saturday and redshirt senior Nick Papac won two to move on to the third round.

Both Sooners will need to win two matches on Sunday to earn a spot in the main singles draw, which is scheduled to begin Thursday, Oct. 2.

No. 3 ranked junior Axel Alvarez, No. 16 ranked senior Dane Webb and 40th ranked sophomore Andrew Harris were each earlier selected for the main singles draw and are hoping to be joined by Ghilea and Papac.

Ghilea drew a bye in the first round before topping Oystein Steiro of North Carolina in a three-set match in the evening session 2-6, 7-6, 7-6.

Ghilea will see David Fox of Denver in the third round, Sunday at 11:30 a.m. The winner will advance to the fourth round, scheduled for Sunday at 2:00 p.m.

Papac defeated Diogo Casa of UTSA 6-3, 6-0 in his morning match and then dispatched Nikolas Papic of Fresno State 6-1, 6-2 in the evening match.

Papac will face Eric Diaz of Georgia in the third round on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. The winner will advance to the fourth round, scheduled for Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
