The Oklahoma women's tennis team finished its first day at the Northwestern Invite with six singles wins and two doubles wins.
Senior Abbi Melrose won her first round match against Kirsten Lewis of Kentucky 6-0, 6-4 before losing her first fall match of the year. She fell to Pittsburgh's Lolade Ogungbesan 6-4, 6-3.
Freshman Brooke Withrow didn't allow a single point in her first match, defeating Grace Kimble of Kentucky 6-0, 6-0. Despite some success, the Sooners finished with a 6-8 singles record after one day.
“I felt like we had a bit of a let down after last weekend, and we were not as tough across the board as I would have liked,” said head coach David Mullins.
Junior Emma Devine continued her success in doubles as her and Melrose defeated Aslina Chua and Hilary Hager of Michigan State 8-1. Devine's doubles record now stands at 3-1 this fall.
Sophomore Morgan Chumney and freshman Christie Brigante also recorded a win over a Michigan State pair. They defeated Allie Baer and Catherine Parenteau by a score of 8-4. The Sooners finished with a 2-2 doubles record on the day.
“Mentally, we need to get sharper to make sure we make the most of our time out here,” said Mullins.
Play resumes at 9 a.m. Saturday.
