ATHENS, Ga. – Oklahoma men's tennis player Alex Ghilea ended his spectacular opening weekend at the Southern Intercollegiate Championship Monday as the runner-up of the Division I singles.
Ghilea fell just short in title match, losing to No. 4 seed Wayne Montgomery of host school Georgia 1-6, 6-3, 2-6 Monday morning.
“Alex played a very good match today,” associate head coach Bo Hodge said. “He just came up a little short, but he has nothing to hang his head about.”
The sophomore had advanced all the way to the championship match by winning four matches during the tournament, including a straight-sets win over No. 16 seed Aron Hiltzik of Illinois in the round of 32.
Fellow Sooners Axel Alvarez and Nick Papac were also in the field at the Southern Intercollegiate, a tournament that turned out to be an excellent start to the Sooners' fall schedule. All three men advanced to the eight-man quarterfinal round and Alvarez and Ghilea both advanced to the semifinals.
“It was a great start to the fall season for all our guys,” Hodge said. “We can build on what they did this weekend.”
Alvarez, a junior, was the No. 1 overall seed in Division I singles and won three matches before eventually dropping his semifinal match with eventual tournament champion, Montgomery. Papac, a redshirt senior, also had a strong tournament. He won three matches, including a defeat of No. 5 seed Ben Wagland of Georgia in the round of 32, on his way to the quarterfinals where he fell to Aleks Vukic of Illinois.
The Sooners are in action again Sept. 20-28 at the Napa Valley Challenger in Napa, Calif.
