Women's Tennis to Miami for NCAAs

NORMAN, Okla.—The No. 18 Oklahoma women's tennis team was selected for the 2014 NCAA Championships announced by the NCAA Tuesday, April 29.

The Sooners (16-6, 6-3 Big 12) will face No. 54 Wichita State in the first round of the Miami Regional on Friday, May 9. The winner will advance to the second round to face the winner of Miami vs. Boston University the following day.

“We've had a lot of success against Wichita State through the years,” OU head coach David Mullins said. “We didn't play them this year but they're having a really good year. We're familiar with their players since they're in our region and I know we'll match up well against them.”

Oklahoma will travel to Miami, Fla., as No. 15 Miami was selected as one of the 16 host sites for the first and second round.

“It's really exciting,” senior Whitney Ritchie said. “We went to Miami last year and it's a beautiful place and campus. We have a pretty good first round matchup and hopefully we'll get a shot at Miami.”

The winner of each site will advance to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen at the 2014 NCAA Championships in Athens, Ga., May 15-20.

“We've worked so hard and it's the last shot we have,” senior Hermon Brhane said. “We're going to keep working hard for the next week and give it our best.”

The selection marks the ninth time in program history and fourth time under Mullins OU qualified for the NCAA Championships (1996, 1997, 1998, 2003, 2004, 2010, 2011 and 2013).

The Sooners enter NCAAs after a 4-2 quarterfinal loss to Texas Tech in the Big 12 Championships.
