NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma women's golf team is in ninth place after one round at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate at Hilton Head Island, S.C. The 16-team field features 13 squads ranked in Golfweek's top 30.
The seventh-ranked Sooners carded a 298 (+14) at the par-71 Long Cove Golf Club. No. 3-ranked Duke leads the tournament after shooting an even-par 284. No. 8 Alabama and No. 14 Vanderbilt are tied for second place, nine strokes back, while No. 13 South Carolina is in fourth (+10).
Anne-Catherine Tanguay leads the Sooners after 18 holes. The senior shot a 1-under 70 and is tied for fifth place with Stanford's Mariah Stackhouse, three strokes behind leader Stephanie Meadow of Alabama. Tanguay registered four birdies on the way to her first under-par round of the spring season.
OU freshman Alexandra Kaui, who has finished in the top 20 in each of her first five collegiate events, parred 14 holes and totaled a 75 (+4) in the opening round. She is tied for 32nd place.
Senior Chirapat Jao-Javanil shot a 76 (+5) and is tied for 45th place. Fellow senior Emily Collins finished the round one shot behind Jao-Javanil and is tied for 53rd place. Kaitlyn Rohrback, another senior, carded an 80 (+9) and is tied for 72nd place.
Fifth-year OU head coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell said she was pleased that the Sooners were able to stick with some of the best teams in the country, even through tough conditions.
“We faced some tough conditions again today with cold and rain,” Drouin-Luttrell said. “We need to adjust our speed on the greens and make some pars. We're playing against some of the best teams in the country and we are still right there; two more rounds to stick to our game plan and play our own game.”
Second-round play will begin Saturday at 7 a.m. CT. The tournament will conclude Sunday. Live stats are available at GolfStat.com.
