Flushing Finale

Two Oklahoma men's tennis players will take part in the 2014 USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing. N.Y. Nov. 6-9.

Junior Axel Alvarez qualified for the season finale, which features a 32-player singles draw, by virtue of his title defense at the USTA/ITA Central Region Championship in October on the home courts of the Headington Family Tennis Center.

Alvarez claimed the tournament's No. 6 seed and will face Fernando Bergajo of Armstrong State in the first round on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. CT.

The Asturias, Spain native, listed at No. 3 in the ITA initial preseason rankings, won six total matches to take home the singles title for the second consecutive year. The dominant performance moved his record to 9-2 in singles for the 2014 fall season.

Senior Dane Webb will also compete for the Sooners in New York. Webb will face Andrew Watson in round one on Thursday at 1:30 a.m. CT.

Webb, No. 14 in the ITA preseason rankings, qualified for the tournament as an at-large selection. The Richardson, Texas native advanced to the quarterfinals round at the USTA/ITA Central Region Championship in Norman and has compiled a 5-3 record in singles play this fall. Webb also paired with Alvarez in doubles at the Regional Championship. The pair, ranked 40^th by the ITA, finished as runners-up, having won four matches during the championship.

Fellow Sooners Alex Ghilea and Andrew Harris will also be in action this week. The pair, both sophomores, will compete at the Bulldog Scramble hosted by the University of Georgia Nov. 7-9.

The tournament is a round robin event and each Sooner will play three singles matches. Ghilea competed at the Scramble last season and knotched an undefeated 3-0 record.
