Sooners Finish Fall Season

NORMAN, Okla. -- The Oklahoma women's tennis team finished its fall slate Sunday by concluding tournaments in both Orlando, Fla., and Houston, Texas.

Two OU freshmen participated in consolation play at the USTA Collegiate Clay Court Invitational in Orlando. Christie Brigante defeated Jillian Rooney of Northwestern 6-2, 6-2, while Lily Miyazaki defeated Manon Peri of Northwestern by the same score.

“We really got better as the weekend progressed and we adjusted to the clay,” said OU head coach David Mullins. “Our performances these last couple of days were outstanding and all three of them should be feeling very good about their games as we head into the offseason.”

The Sooners finished with a total singles record of 8-4 in Orlando.

Five other members of the Sooners squad participated in the final day of competition at the Jason's Deli Collegiate Invitational in Houston, Texas.

The Sooners finished with a singles record of 1-4 on the day while losing both doubles matches.

Junior Emma Devine picked up the lone win for OU by defeating Alejandra Galvis of Iowa State 6-2, 1-6, 10-8. She finished the weekend with a 2-1 record.

Sophomore Morgan Chumney was the only other Sooner to pick up two singles wins, but lost to Sami Budai of Iowa State 6-3, 6-3 to finish with the same record as Devine.

In doubles play, the duo of Devine and fellow junior Zita Engbroks dropped their first doubles match of the weekend. After winning the previous two, they fell to Sami Budai and Ksenia Pronina of Iowa State 8-3.

“Our girls grasped the concept of competing every point this weekend, which we absolutely need to carry over into spring,” said OU assistant coach Boomer Saia. “We need to find ways to play the bigger points better.”

The team finished with overall records of 5-11 in singles and 2-6 in doubles.
