KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Oklahoma men's tennis player Andrew Harris won his first match in the prequalifying draw at the Knoxville Challenger at the Goodfriend Tennis Center in Knoxville, Tenn. on Sunday.
The tournament is part of the USTA Pro Circuit which features some of the best players in the world. Collegiate players can participate in USTA Pro Circuit events, but are not eligible for any prize money.
Harris, a sophomore, defeated Dennis Novikov of the U.S. 6-7(3), 6-4, 7-5 in an extremely close match that lasted nearly two and a half hours.
Harris and Novikov were even in nearly every statistical category, but Harris took five breaks to Novikov's three to secure the win and advance.
The Melbourne, Australia native will face Eric Quigley at 9 a.m. CT on Monday in the second round of qualifying. Harris will need to win two more matches in the qualifying draw to earn a spot in the 32-player main draw.
