NORMAN -- The 16th-ranked University of Oklahoma women's golf team finished round one of the Schooner Fall Classic tied for 15th place Saturday in Norman. The event is being played at the 6,082-yard, par-70 Belmar Golf Club.
The 17-team event features six squads ranked in Golfweek's top 25 countdown. No. 14 Mississippi State is in first place after shooting a 277 (-3), while SMU finished the round in second at 282 (+2). No. 19 Texas A&M and No. 24 LSU are tied for third place at 3 over par.
OU freshman Hannah Wood made a successful collegiate debut with a 1-under-par 69. Wood, from Centennial, Colo., played 16 par-or-better holes and is tied for fifth place out of 91 competitors.
Sophomore Alexandra Kaui, the only returning starter on the team, carded a 2-over 72 on the day and is tied for 28th place. Kaui was at par through 12 holes before double-bogeying the par-3 13th.
Freshman Ana Ruiz carded a 4-over 74 in her first collegiate round and is tied for 44th place, while sophomore Maggie Neece is tied for 84th place at 11 over. Freshman Rylee Pedigo shot an 85 (+15) and is tied for 89th place.
Sophomore Amanda Johnson and redshirt freshman Haley Hill are competing as individuals for the Sooners and unattached from team scoring. Johnson recorded a 12-over 82 and is in 86th place while Hill shot a 90.
Sixth-year OU head coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell was excited about Wood's play, but said the team has plenty of room for improvement before tomorrow's round.
“Hannah was impressive,” Drouin-Luttrell said. “She got some awesome up-and-downs. She's a solid player and played consistent all day. Alex played pretty well, too. Alex and Ana were both pretty consistent. We have a little bit of work to do. We're going to get on the range and practice this afternoon and figure it out for tomorrow. It's a quick turnaround.”
The Sooners will tee off in Sunday's second round at 9:15 a.m. CT. The final round will be held Monday. Live stats are available at BirdieFire.com.
