NORMAN, Okla. -- The Oklahoma women's tennis team will finish its fall schedule participating in tournaments in Orlando, Fla., and Houston, Texas, this weekend. The Sooners close out their six-event fall slate at the USTA Collegiate Clay Court Tournament in Orlando and The Jason's Deli Collegiate Invitational in Houston.
“We are looking forward to playing in two events this weekend and getting to play some unfamiliar opponents,” said Mullins.
OU Senior Abbi Melrose and freshmen Christie Brigante and Lily Miyazaki will compete in the USTA Collegiate Clay Court Invitational presented by VISIT FLORIDA in from Oct. 30-Nov. 2. The tournament will be held at the ESPN Wide World of Sports, Grand Cypress, and Isleworth.
“We have some really tough matches in Orlando,” said OU head coach David Mullins. “I am looking forward to seeing Abbi, Lily, and Christie against the best in the country.”
Select matches will be broadcast live on ESPN3 on Thursday and Sunday. Kevin Corke will host both broadcasts on Thursday, with Patrick McEnroe joining the telecast on Sunday. No OU matches will be televised on center court Thursday, but a video feed will be available for Melrose and Miyazaki.
Other participants at the tournament include Auburn, Clemson, Columbia, Florida, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Miami, Penn State, Princeton, South Alabama, Stetson, UCF, USC, and Virginia Tech.
In the Jason's Deli Collegiate Invitational, held Oct. 31-Nov. 2, OU juniors Emma Devine and Zita Engbroks, sophomores Morgan Chumney and Ann Pepper, and freshmen Malene Stripp and Brooke Withrow will compete. One singles and doubles match will take place each day.
The tournament is held at the University of Houston. Other schools participating include Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Lamar, Rice, Sam Houston State, SMU, Stephen F. Austin, Syracuse, and TCU.
