Miyazaki Falls in Second Round

October 02, 2014 | Women's Tennis

Freshman Lily Miyazaki lost her second round match of The Shipyard Cup to Anamika Bhargava of the United States 6-2, 6-3 Thursday. The Tokyo, Japan native was the only collegiate player remaining in the ITF Pro Circuit main draw.

“Lily gained some terrific match experience against some quality competition this week,” said assistant coach Boomer Saia. “I think this experience will help Lily going forward, especially helping her prepare for regionals.”

Bhargava currently holds an ITF singles ranking of 672. She defeated Luisa Stefani of Brazil in the first round, 7-5, 6-1.

Miyazaki reached the second round of the Shipyard Cup, held at the Van der Meer Shipyard Tennis Resort in Hilton Head, S.C., by defeating Emma Flood of Norway, Wednesday.

Miyazaki had won her five previous matches in fall play, including four wins at the OU Fall Invite in Norman, Okla.

“After this tournament, Lily will need to get back to training to help prepare her for the rest of the fall,” said Saia. “I saw some great things from Lily this week and some things we will need to work on, which I have no doubt she will do.”

The Sooners resume play at the USTA/ITA Regional Championships in Stillwater, Okla., Oct. 16-19.  The USTA/ITA Regionals feature some of the top men's and women's players across the country. Over 8,000 student-athletes from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA, Junior and Community Colleges compete at one of the 84 USTA/ITA Regional Championships held across the country.
