MANSFIELD, Texas – Oklahoma men's tennis player Andrew Harris won two matches at the USA F28 Futures tournament at the Walnut Creek Country Club in Mansfield, Texas before falling in the quarterfinal round on Friday.
The annual International Tennis Federation (ITF) event features some of the best young players from all around the world. This year's tournament included 32 players from 15 different countries. Harris won the tournament in 2013, winning five total matches to claim the title.
The 40th ranked sophomore won his first match with Evan King of the U.S. in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2. He then toppled Daniel Nguyen, also of the U.S., 6-1, 7-6(6) to move to the quarterfinal round. Harris dropped his quarterfinal match to Michael Mmoh of the U.S., 6-3, 2-6, 4-6.
“Andrew did a good job of getting through his first two matches,” associate head coach Bo Hodge said. “Today he was up big in the third set and let the guy back in the match. For him to take his game to the next level he has to do a better job of closing matches out. We will continue to work on that.”
Harris is now 5-3 in singles play this fall including two wins over top-30 ranked players at the ITA All-American Championship in Tulsa two weeks ago.
Next up for the Sooners is the Charlottesville Challenger in Charlottesville, N.C. Oct. 25-30.
