NORMAN, Okla. -- Oklahoma junior Nick Papac is one of 12 men competing for the last chance to make the US Open field.
Papac begins competition Friday in the US Open National Playoffs at the Connecticut Tennis Center at Yale in New Haven, Conn. The winner of the tournament earns a wild card into the 2013 US Open Qualifying Tournament held the week prior to the US Open in Flushing, N.Y.
Papac, a Norman, Okla., native, won the USTA Missouri Valley Sectional Qualifying Tournament June 30 to earn his spot in this weekend's field. Papac faces University of Florida incoming freshman Elliott Orkin in one of four first round matches (four players have first-round byes).
Quarterfinals of the US Open National Playoffs commence Saturday, with the semifinals and final the successive days.
Papac was instrumental in the Sooners' defense of the Big 12 Tournament Championship, clinching the doubles point with partner Lawrence Formentera and earning a second point with a singles victory.
