NORMAN, Okla. -- Emily Collins picked a heck of a time for her first-ever bogey-free round in competition.
Collins, a junior on the fourth-ranked University of Oklahoma golf team, shot a 5-under-par 67 Thursday to lead the Sooners to a second-place standing after the first round of the 24-team NCAA Central Regional in Norman.
OU carded a 5-under 283 at its own 6,298-yard, par-72 Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club and trails Florida by one shot. It leads third-place Duke by a stroke and fourth-place TCU by eight shots.
Collins' performance broke her previous collegiate low by two strokes and was good enough to lead the 126-player field. She birdied holes 3, 5, 11, 13 and 16, and has a one-shot advantage over Florida's Elcin Ulu. Five others are two shots behind Collins.
"It was exciting," said Collins, who played in OU's No. 4 position Thursday. "I didn't miss any fairways and my putter was working. That makes it fun. It was perfect timing that it could happen at regionals and I'm just happy I could help my team today."
Also counting toward OU's team score were fellow juniors Anne-Catherine Tanguay, Chirapat Jao-Javanil and Kaitlyn Rohrback.
Tanguay, ranked 28th nationally, shot a 1-under 71 and is tied for 13th place. Jao-Javanil, who is No. 8 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings and won last year's NCAA title, countered a triple-bogey on the par-4 11th with three birdies to finish at even par. She is tied for 26th place. Rohrback also registered three birdies en route to a 1-over 73 and is tied for 35th place.
Senior Taylor Schmidt played the front nine at 1 over par and finished with a 6-over 78. She is tied for 105th place.
"I'm really happy," said fourth-year OU head coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell. "I think we played really solid. We haven't played this well in a little while, so it was nice to see and will be good for the girls' confidence.
"Emily was playing really solid and hitting it close (to the pin). It was fun watching her go low. She's been playing really well and swinging at it really good, and it was just a matter of time before her putter got hot. It got hot today and she kept going with that momentum."
Norman is one of three NCAA Regional sites. The top eight teams from each regional will advance to the NCAA Championships, to be held May 21-24 in Athens, Ga.
Collins, who is ranked 60th nationally by Golfweek, says the Sooners have a slight advantage since they're playing in Norman.
"The home course definitely helps because we all know the bounces and the breaks," she said. "There's a little extra adrenaline going and I think the whole team feels that.
"I'm just going to approach tomorrow the same way: try to hit fairways and greens and go at it with confidence. We all know the course and hopefully the whole team will continue to play well."
Friday's second round will start at 7:30 a.m. The Sooners will tee off starting at 12:56 p.m. from hole 10 and will be paired with Duke and Florida for the second straight day.
The tournament is open to the public and admission is free.
