NORMAN, Okla.—The second-ranked Oklahoma women's golf team fired a first-round 295 (+7) Friday to finish the day in second place at the 15-team SMU Dallas Invitational at the Dallas Athletic Club in Dallas, Texas.
With 36 holes remaining, the Sooners trail Kansas State by one stroke and are ahead of third-place Denver by one shot and fourth-place Ohio State by four shots.
“We hung in there today,” said OU head coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell. “We were five over par as a team at the turn and made some putts on the back nine. But we still have a lot of golf in this tournament.”
OU was led by junior Chirapat Jao-Javanil, who fired a 3-under 69 to lead the 80-competitor field. Jao-Javanil, who holds a one-shot lead over a trio of golfers, recorded a team-high six birdies and is in search of her third win of the year and the sixth of her career.
Junior Emily Collins recorded two birdies and four bogeys en route to a first-round 74 (+2) and a tie for 11th place with two rounds remaining. Kaitlyn Rohrback recorded four birdies on the day and finished one shot behind Collins with a 75 (+3). The junior stands in a tie for 14th place.
Junior Anne-Catherine Tanguay shot a 5-over 77 and ended the round in a tie for 26th place, while senior Taylor Schmidt is tied for 49th place after carding an 81 (+9).
Senior Jacki Marshall, who is playing as an individual for the Sooners, fired a 74 (+3) and is tied for 11th place with Collins.
The Sooners tee off in Saturday's second round beginning at 8 a.m. CT. Live stats will be available at Golfstat.com.
