Sooners Finish Day One of Fall Opener

NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma women's tennis team opened the 2012 fall season today. The team split as two Sooners played at the University of Texas Invitational in Austin, Texas and six Sooners started at the Country Club of Little Rock Invitational in Little Rock, Ark.

Junior Whitney Wofford and sophomore Jane Pinkston competed at the University of Texas Invitational. Wofford and Pinkston fell to Llona Serchenko (University of North Texas), 6-1, 6-2, and Emma Helisten (Tulane) 6-0, 3-6, 6-3, respectively.

The duo also competed together in doubles, falling to Heidi Stewart/Holly Verner (SMU), 8-2, in the first round of doubles play.

The invitational continues with the consolation bracket tomorrow at 8:30 a.m.

Hermone Brhane, Emma Devine, Zita Engbroks, Mia Lancaster, Abbi Melrose and Whitney Ritchie competed in Little Rock, Ark. at the Country Club of Little Rock Invitational. Melrose and Engbroks recovered from a loss in doubles by winning their singles matches and Devine topped Arkansas' Ana Lorena Belmar, 6-2, 6-1.

Ritchie/Brhane won their first round of doubles against Mississippi's Jones/Stevens, 9-7. Devine/Lancaster also defeated Mississippi's Rhode Moe/Milutinovic, 8-6, to advance to the second round.
