Brhane Advances in Singles and Doubles

NORMAN, Okla. -- University of Oklahoma newcomer Hermone Brhane captured victories in both singles and doubles Saturday to continue in the main draw at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Region Tournament in Tulsa, Okla.
Brhane defeated Nebraska's Patricia Veresova, 7-5, 6-1, to advance in singles competition. Brhane faces Kansas' Maria Cardona Sunday in the round of eight.
“Hermon had another outstanding performance today and seems to grow in confidence with each match,” Head Coach David Mullins said.
Brhane teamed with Whitney Ritchie for two doubles victories Saturday. The Sooner duo beat Minnesota's Teresa Brichacova and Doron Muravnik, 8-3, and then cruised over Iowa's Shelby Talcott and Morven McCullough, 8-1, to advance to the final four. Brhane and Ritchie face Tulsa's Isuara Enrique and Sam Vickers for a spot in the championship match.
“Our doubles play continued to show signs of progress today,” coach Mullins said.
Ritchie, seeded third, fell to Missouri's Cierra Gaytan-Leach, 6-3, 7-5, in her singles match.
Mia Lancaster and Zita Engbroks fell to Wichita State's Veronika Blaskova and Lucia Kovalova, 9-8 in round three of the main draw doubles.
In the consolation bracket Mia Lancaster defeated Iowa State's Ksenia Pronina, 7-6, 6-0, before defeating Iowa's Katie Zordani, 6-4, 6-1. Lancaster will compete in the final four of the consolation bracket.
