NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma women's golf team carded a 284 (-4) and stands in first place after Monday's opening round of the 18-team Susie Maxwell Berning Classic at the 6,327-yard, par-72 Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club in Norman.
The No. 14 Sooners, looking for their second consecutive Susie Maxwell title, are five strokes ahead of No. 15 Texas Tech, No. 17 Notre Dame and No. 26 Texas State, which all shot a 1-over 289.
"I think we played solid," said OU head coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell. "We made some putts early and took advantage of the nice conditions. Finishing under par is awesome. We haven't shot under par as a team this year, so it was good to see us do that. I am proud of the way the girls played, but with 36 holes left we just have to keep going with what we have talked about for the course."
Oklahoma is led by the junior trio of Emily Collins, Chirapat Jao-Javanil and Anne-Catherine Tanguay, who each fired a 2-under 70. They are tied for fifth place, just two strokes out of the lead.
Playing in OU's No. 1 spot, Collins was 1 over par through six holes before getting hot and birdying four of the next five.
"I finally got my putter working," said Collins of holes 7 through 11. "I had been hitting the ball well all day, but the first few holes I just wasn't making anything. Then I hit a couple shots really close to the hole and started making putts, which was nice."
Tanguay, the tournament's defending champion, racked up a team-high six birdies on the day, including four on the first eight holes. She stood at -4 before playing the last five holes at 2 over.
Jao-Javanil is the defending national champion and played the first round in the team's No. 3 spot. Her day included three birdies (all on the front nine) and just one bogey (hole No. 18).
"They're both unbelievable players; they're so good," said Collins of Tanguay and Jao-Javanil. "The three of us each shooting 2 under is exciting. We know this course so well and I think our whole team will continue to play well the last two days."
Senior Taylor Schmidt and junior Kaitlyn Rohrback shot matching scores of 74 (+2) Monday and stand in a tie for 24th place. Each registered two birdies and four bogeys.
Senior Jacki Marshall and junior Jade Staggs are competing as individuals for the Sooners. Marshall recorded a 1-over 73, putting her in a tie for 19th place. Staggs stands in a tie for 70th place after carding a 79 (+7).
The 34th Susie Maxwell Berning Classic will resume Tuesday morning with the Sooners teeing off starting at 10:20 CT. The tournament will conclude with Wednesday's final round. Live stats are available at Golfstat.com.
