NORMAN, Okla. -- The Sooners open the 2011 fall campaign on Friday, Sept. 23, when they travel to Waco, Texas, to compete in the Baylor-HEB Invitational at the Hurd Tennis Center.

"We're excited to get the official fall season underway," John Roddick said. "I feel like we have been playing well in practice and I'm excited to see the guys move that into tournament play. This is a good opportunity to evaluate where the team is at starting the beginning of the year."

Sixteen schools are represented in this year's tournament which includes seven players currently ranked in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) national preseason rankings. In addition, three freshmen are ranked among the ITA's top 10 rookies.

The tournament will consist of one 64-player singles draw and a 32-team doubles bracket. Action will begin at 8 a.m. on Friday and continue throughout the weekend.

Teams participating include: Arizona, Baylor, Fresno State, Iowa, UL-Lafayette, Laredo CC, Maryland, Midwestern State, New Mexico State, Northwestern, Portland, Rice, UT-Arlington, UT-San Antonio and UT-Pan American.

The Sooners are led by junior Costin Paval , the ITA Central Region runner-up and 2010 All-American . Paval, a native of Romania, is ranked No. 17 nationally. Sophomore Peerakit Siributwong, the 2011 Big 12 Freshman of the Year, checks in at No. 84.

OU is the only squad that possesses two ranked newcomers in seventh-ranked Guillermo Alcorta and No. 9 Dane Webb.

Paval is the tournament's top-ranked player at No. 17 followed by No. 41 Harry Fowler (Rice), No. 43 Roberto Maytin (BU), No. 47 Remi Boutillier (Fresno State), No. 76 Gosh Graves (Northwestern), No. 84 Peerakit Siributwong (OU) and No. 101 Marc Bruche (Iowa). Baylor's Mate Zsiga is ranked No. 3 among newcomers.

Two ranked doubles teams are represented in this year's tournament. Baylor's Maytin and Marko Krickovich are listed at No. 23 in the ITA rankings and Iowa's Bruche and Will Vasos are ranked No. 41.

PAVAL THE LEADER
The 2010 All-American and Big 12 Freshman of the Year looks to take over the No. 1 spot for the Sooners in the spring and the fall tournaments will go a long way in solidifying him in that position. Paval's fall ranking of No. 17 is the highest a Sooner has been ranked since Andrei Daescu was ranked No. 10 in 2009. The two-time NCAA qualifier finished the 2011 campaign with a record of 18-7.

NEWCOMER ALERT
Roddick's squad added two high-profile newcomers in Guillermo Alcorta and Dane Webb. Alcorta reached a career-high ATP ranking of 580 and was one of the top three juniors in Spain before coming to Norman. Webb, a five-star recruit by TennisRecruiting.net, was the No. 5 recruit nationally and No. 1 in the Gulf States and Texas.

2011 SPRING RECAP
Oklahoma finished the year with a 16-8 record after advancing to the Big 12 finals for the first time in program history. In the championship match OU fell to No. 9 Texas A&M, 4-0. In Big 12 tournament play OU swept No. 22 Texas Tech in the quarterfinals, 4-0, and then upset top-seed and fifth-ranked Baylor, 4-3. The Sooners then fell to No. 36 Tulsa in regional action to end the year.
