Bailey, Pencil Named McLendon Finalists

NORMAN, Okla. – Oklahoma hurdler Eric Bailey and graduate assistant Sherraine Pencil were named top 10 finalists for the 2010-11 John McLendon Postgraduate Scholarship, the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) announced this week.
Bailey was named to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-America® Men's Track & Field/Cross Country Second Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) the organization earlier this year. He recently earned an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.
The Portland, Ore., native finished third in the 400-meter hurdles at the Big 12 Championships while graduating with a bachelor's degree in sociology. Bailey will continue his studies in Norman as he turns his attention to postgraduate studies at the University of Oklahoma as a graduate assistant with the athletics diversity council.
In his three years competing for OU after transferring from Weber State University, Bailey compiled a total of 11 All-Big 12 honors. Bailey closed out his collegiate career with a 12th-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles in the USA Championships. Bailey bowed out in the semifinals with a time of 51.53.
He was also named to the 2011 Winter Chick-fil-A Community of Champions for his academic achievements, community service and leadership on and off the track. Bailey has been involved with a number of community service projects including participating in and serving as a poster model for the 2010 OU Student Life White Ribbon Campaign against sexual assault.
Pencil, a native of Toronto, Ontario, is a 2009 graduate of San Diego State University and is currently pursuing her master's degree at OU. She currently serves as a graduate assistant with the athletics diversity council and has spent time working in the business office, compliance, administration and the Varsity O Association. Pencil aspires to become an athletics director.
She was a four-year letterwinner in track and field for the Aztecs. Pencil qualified for the NCAA outdoor championships three consecutive years from 2006-08 and was named to the All-Mountain West outdoor team from 2006-08. The former Aztec captain earned All-West Region honors from the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association in 2007 and 2008.
The John McLendon Memorial Minority Postgraduate Scholarship Awards are presented to senior-level minority students who intend to pursue a graduate degree in athletics administration. The winners will each receive a $10,000 scholarship to be used towards postgraduate studies in athletics administration. The five winners will be announced in late July. Oklahoma has had a recipient of the scholarship in each of the last three years.
