NORMAN, Okla. - OU women's tennis head coach David Mullins and assistant coach Brook Connelly won the mixed doubles title at the 2011 USTA Missouri Valley US Open Playoff Friday at Westwood Tennis Center in Norman.

OU's coaches won four-consecutive matches in straight-sets, including their win over Trevor Horstmann and Yawna Allen in the championship match, 6-2, 6-1.

"I think it is great that we have this opportunity not only for our own enjoyment but also to show that there is a coaching staff here that can coach and play at a very high level," Mullins said.

Mullins and Connelly will advance to the US Open National Playoffs on Aug. 24-27, at Yale University in New Haven, Conn., with the win along with 15 other sectional champions from around the country.

"We had a lot of fun competing again this weekend and it is exciting that we get to go to New Haven to compete for a wild card in the US Open," Mullins said. "The competition level out there will be tough but we seem to be improving with each match."

The winner of the 16-team draw will earn a spot at the 2011 US Open which begins Aug. 29 in New York City.
