STANFORD, Calif. - University of Oklahoma tennis standout Costin Paval fell to Georgia Tech's 14th-ranked Guillermo Gomez, 7-6(4), 7-5, in the second round of the 2011 NCAA Championships Thursday at the Taube Tennis Center in Stanford, Calif.
Paval, the nation's 41st-ranked singles player, ends the season with an 18-7 record after Gomez, ranked No. 14, narrowly edged the Bucharest, Romania, native.
The first was decided by a tiebreaker set that went in favor of the Yellow Jacket, 7-6(4). Paval dropped the second set by a final of 7-5.
Paval is now eliminated from singles competition. He and Ionut Beleleu will await the final rankings, which will be released June 8, to determine if they made All-America status.
