STANFORD, Calif. - Costin Paval advanced to the second round of the 2011 NCAA Championships after downing Ohio State's Matt Allare, while Ionut Beleleu's Oklahoma career came to an end at the Taube Tennis Center in Stanford, Calif., on Wednesday.
Paval, the nation's 41st-ranked singles player, boasts an 18-6 record after taking down Allare, ranked No. 50, in straight sets Wednesday. The Bucharest, Romania, native took the first set 6-3 and earned a 7-5 victory in the second. Paval will face the nation's 14th-ranked singles player in Georgia Tech's Guillermo Gomez in the second round on Thursday at 3:30.
Guillermo advanced after he defeated Washington's Kyle McMorrow, ranked No. 49, in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4.
Beleleu, ranked No. 24, finished his 2011 campaign with a final record of 13-10 after falling to Virginia's 56th-ranked Jarmere Jenkins. Beleleu fell in the first set 6-2, but rallied to take the second 7-6. Jenkins proved too much in the third, winning it 6-4. The 2010 USTA/ITA Central Region Champion ends his collegiate career at OU having won 94 singles matches to only 45 losses.
