NORMAN, Okla. - The 30th-ranked Oklahoma men's tennis team opens Big 12 play this weekend when they host No. 4 Texas on Friday, March 25 at 6 p.m., and No. 6 Texas A&M on Sunday, March 27 at 1 p.m.
“We're excited to host Texas and Texas A&M this weekend,” John Roddick said. “Obviously, the big rivalry with Texas will be exciting and I think we are going to have a good crowd out.
“The weekend coincides with the tennis facility being opened to membership and the grand opening. It's going to be an exciting weekend for the tennis program as a whole, but more importantly for the team. They have a good opportunity to play two teams ranked in the top-6 in the country.”
The Sooners (9-3) have won seven of their last eight matches and most recently downed then-No. 61 TCU, 4-3, following a loss to now top-ranked Virginia, 5-2.
Texas (13-4) is fresh off a 7-0 sweep over St. Edwards following a, 5-2, loss to Virginia. All of the Longhorns' losses have come against top-15 teams. On the year, UT has defeated five teams ranked in the top-20.
Last year, the Sooners ousted Texas from the 2010 NCAA Tournament in Athens, Ga., after defeating the Longhorns 4-2 in the Round of 16. Prior to that meeting OU had not beaten the Longhorns since 2005 when the Sooners claimed a 4-3 victory.
OU's second Big 12 foe, Texas A&M (15-4), is coming off a 4-3 loss at No. 7 Pepperdine, following a 6-1 win over No. 12-ranked California.
Last season, the Sooners dropped each of their regular season matches against the Aggies and the Longhorns but look to capitalize on their home court.
"Hopefully we can go out and play the kind of tennis I know we're capable of and play good matches. We've been pretty focused in practice and I expect us to be able to go out and execute come Friday and Sunday.”
| RANKINGS RUNDOWN |
The Sooners are led by senior Ionut Beleleu and reigning All-American Costin Paval. Beleleu, a native of Romania, is ranked No. 32 nationally. Fellow Romanian Paval checks in at No. 65 and Peerakit Siributwong, a newcomer from Thailand, rounds out the rankings at No. 113.
Three of Texas' starters are ranked in the top-90, led by No. 33 Ed Corrie. Jean Andersen (No. 80) and Kellen Damico (No. 90) complete the Longhorns in singles rankings.
In doubles, UT has four ranked tandems in No. 5 Corrie and Andersen, No. 28 Damico and David Holiner, No. 50 Ben Chen and Daniel Whitehead and No. 71 Chen and Vasko Mladenov.
Texas A&M is led by Austin Krajicek, ranked No. 23 nationally, Jeff Dadamo (No. 62 ) and Alexis Klegou (No. 100) in singles. The Aggies also posses three ranked duos in second-ranked Dadamo and Krajicek, No. 53 Alberto Bautista and Colin Hoover and No. 63 Grigorov and Junior Ore.
