NORMAN, Okla. – Senior Ana-Maria Constantinescu and junior Marie-Pier Huet of the University of Oklahoma women's tennis team open the 2011 season on Friday, Jan. 14 at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic in Palm Springs, Calif.
Competition begins at 11:30 a.m. (CT) with the first round of singles and doubles, featuring 32 of the nation's top players. The tournament is an individual event and will not be counted towards OU's team record for the spring season.
"This event is probably the strongest individual event outside of the two national championships held each year,” OU head coach David Mullins said. “It is a very elite field and we are honored that we received an invitation.”
Constantinescu, the tournament's No. 8 seed, will face Lyndsay Kinstler of USC in the first round of singles Friday, while Huet plays Stanford's Amilia Herring.
“Both Ana and Marie Pier saw little or no singles action in the fall for a number of reasons,” Mullins added. “This tournament is vital for their preparation for the upcoming dual meet season.”
Constantinescu and Huet will also play in the doubles championship, facing Amanda Craddock and Cierra Gaytan-Leach of conference-rival Texas.
