NORMAN, Okla. – Senior Andrei Daescu opens play at the 2010 NCAA Men's Tennis Singles Championships against a familiar opponent in Georgia's Javier Garrapiz at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga., Wednesday, May 26 at 3:30 p.m.
Daescu, ranked No. 28, and 22nd-ranked Garrapiz are well aware of one another as the two faced off in the Elite Eight matchup that took place on Sunday, May 23. In that contest, Garrapiz got the better of Daescu at the No. 1 spot, 6-4, 6-2, to give the No. 11 Bulldogs a 4-0 victory over 20th-ranked Oklahoma.
The Bucharest, Romania, native looks to pick up where he left off on the individual circuit. Last fall Daescu was the runner up at the D'Novo/ITA All-American Championships and advanced to the round of 16 at the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships.
This is Daescu's second appearance at the NCAA Men's Tennis Singles Championships Clancy Shields of Boise State. He was selected in 2008 where the sophomore fell in the first round.
Daescu and freshman Costin Paval, ranked No. 18, will take on Florida's No. 8-ranked Antoine Benneteau and Alexandre Lacroix in the NCAA Men's Doubles Championships on Thursday, May 27. The duo boasts an 11-7 record at No. 1 doubles.
