Women's Tennis Jumps to No. 35 in ITA Rankings

NORMAN, Okla.—The undefeated Oklahoma women's tennis team jumped nine spots to No. 35 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association top-75 rankings released Tuesday.
The No. 35 mark is OU's highest national ranking since Feb. 16, 2005, when the Sooners claimed the No. 24 spot.
“The rankings are a great indicator of the success we have had so far this season,” OU head coach David Mullins said. “However, we are still in February and still have the most challenging part of our schedule ahead of us.”
Oklahoma (6-0, 0-0 Big 12) is off to its best season start since 2003 when OU won eight-straight matches before losing to UNLV on March 2, 2003. The Sooners have shut out their opponents in four of their six matches this season and have beaten two top-40 opponents.
Following three shutouts and an upset over then-No. 30 Alabama, the Sooners entered the ITA top-75 for the first time this season on Feb. 12. OU claimed the No. 55 spot after being unranked in the first four polls. OU then jumped 11 spots to No. 44 on Feb. 18, after shutting out Penn State and upsetting then-No. 32 Tulsa.
“We just need to continue to focus on improving and staying healthy,” Mullins said. “If we do that then I have no doubt we can continue to move up in the rankings.”
OU's key to success this season has been consistency. The Sooners have won the doubles point in all six matches this season and have won 15 of 18 doubles matches overall. In singles, OU has won 30 of 36 singles matches and has won 26 of those 30 matches in straight-sets.
Nine of OU's 2010 opponents were ranked in the latest ITA poll, including six teams from the Big 12.
Junior Ana-Maria Constantinescu remains in the top-125 singles players individually, moving to No. 76 nationally. Constantinescu and doubles partner Teona Tsertsvadze moved up to No. 29 in the doubles rankings.
The Sooners will end a ten-day break this weekend as they head to Fayetteville, Ark., to face Memphis on Saturday, Feb. 27 and No. 18 Arkansas on Sunday, Feb. 28.
