Oklahoma Update from Indoors and Austin

NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma men's tennis team competed at different venues Friday, as Ionut Beleleu competed at the consolations of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships in New York, while five Sooners finished day one at the Austin Invitational in Austin, Texas.

Ionut Beleleu defeated Michigan's Evan King in the first round of the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships Consolation draws Friday and will face Kentucky's Eric Quigley Saturday at the new indoor facilities at the USTA-Billie Jean National Tennis Center.

Beleleu opened consolation play in a battle with King, ranked No. 95 nationally. The Sooner dropped the first set 6-2 to the Wolverine, but rallied to take the following sets, 6-4, 6-2. Beleleu, a native of Romania, will take on UK's Quigley, ranked No. 8 nationally, in the consolation second round Saturday, Nov. 6.

Austin Invitationals

Oklahoma finished day one with a combined record of 9-3 on the opening day of the Austin Invitationals on the campus of UT.

Lawrence Formentera, Peerakit Siributwong, Jacob Strauss and John Warden all advanced to main draw quarterfinal action Saturday after back-to-back victories on the day. Tsvetan Mihov was the only Sooner not to advance in main draw action. However, the newcomer from Bulgaria will play in the B draw consolation quarterfinals.

In the quarterfinals many Sooners have intriguing matchups. Formentera faces the nation's 115th-ranked Bob Van Overbeek of Florida. Siributwong will take on 77-ranked Kellen Damico of Texas.

In the B Draw Warden takes on the third overall seed Otavio Perim of Marquette, while Strauss battles Jason Lateko of UTA.

Tomorrow's action begins at 10 a.m. with consolation action and main draw action at 10: 15 a.m.
