Beleleu Falls in Indoor Championships

NEW YORK – Oklahoma senior Ionut Beleleu fell to Duke's Henrique Cunha in the opening round of the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships Thursday, at the USTA-Billie Jean National Tennis Center, located in Flushing, N.Y., hosted by Columbia University.

Beleleu, ranked No. 33, earned a spot in the prestigious tournament after winning the USTA/ITA Central Region Singles Championships in Norman on Oct. 25. The Blue Devil's Cunha, the tournament's third overall seed and nation's second ranked singles player, was too much for the Sooner.

Beleleu dropped the first set 6-2 and fell 6-1 in the second set. Beleleu was one of only 32 singles draw participants and will now prepare for the upcoming spring season.

Beleleu will face Michigan's Evan King, ranked No. 95 nationally, in the consolation draw Friday at 10:30 a.m.

Austin Invitational Preview
Five Sooners will travel to Austin, Texas, to compete in the Austin Invitationals, Nov. 5-7, at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center on the University of Texas campus.

Sooners competing in the event include: Jacob Strauss, John Warden, Lawrence Formentera, Tsvetan Mihov, Peerakit Siributwong.

Mihov and Siributwong will team up in the doubles portion along with Warden and Formentera. Action begins Friday with doubles starting at 9 a.m.
