NORMAN, Okla.—Three Sooner women's tennis players begin the spring ranked by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

Ana-Maria Constantinescu was No. 56 nationally in singles and No. 39 in doubles with partner Teona Tsertsvadze in the rankings announced Tuesday.

“It is very nice to see our players get the credit they deserve for their outstanding fall performances,” OU head coach David Mullins said. “Ana has put herself exactly where she needs to be going into the spring season and she is very excited about the opportunities in the weeks ahead."

Constantinescu jumped 15 spots after being ranked No. 71 in the ITA fall rankings.  Tuesday's ranking marks Constantinescu's second-highest individual ranking, Constantinescu was ranked No. 33 in the 2008 ITA preseason rankings.

Constantinescu and Tsertsvadze earned OU's first national ranking in doubles in almost two years.  The last time a Sooner pair was nationally ranked was on Feb. 20, 2008.

"Teona and Ana proved that they are not just one of the best teams in the Central Region but one of the top teams in the country,” Mullins said. “I am looking forward to see how they progress playing the No. 1 position throughout the spring season."

Constantinescu and Tsertsvadze are ranked No. 1 in doubles in the central region, while Constantinescu and Marie-Pier Huet are ranked No. 2 and No. 9, respectively, in singles.

The Sooners begin spring competition on Saturday, Jan. 23, in Norman with a doubleheader against Arkansas-Little Rock and Oral Roberts.  The first match will begin at 11 a.m. at the Headington Family Tennis Center.
