Sooners Advance in WSU Classic

WICHITA, Kan.—The University of Oklahoma women's tennis team opened its fall season Friday morning at the Wichita State University Fall Classic, with one doubles pair advancing to the semifinals and three Sooners advancing to the singles quarterfinals.

In doubles, junior Ana-Maria Constantinescu and Katelyn Connelly defeated Florentina Hanisch and Lenore Lazaroiu of Wichita State, 9-7, to advance to Saturday's doubles semifinals.

Freshmen Brittany Parks and Teona Tsertsvadze, defeated Alexandra Cristello and Leyla Simmons of Oklahoma State in the first round to advance on, 8-5. Later in the doubles quarterfinals Parks and Tsertvadze fell to Arkansas' Annemijn Koenen and Claudine Paulson, 8-3.

In singles, three Sooners won in the first round to advance on to the quarterfinals on Saturday.

Constantinescu, who was named the 2009 Big 12 Player of the Year, defeated Nina Sertic of Kansas State in the first round, 6-2, 6-0. The win marks Constantinescu's 16th straight win over Big 12 opponents. Constantinescu's last conference loss was on April 18, 2008.

Parks and Tsertsvadze also collected wins to advance in singles. Parks shutout Georgescu of Arizona State, 6-0, 6-0, and Tsertvadze defeated Cristello of Oklahoma State, 6-2, 6-4.

Connelly fell in the singles first round to Hanisch of Wichita State in a tie-breaker set, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

The Sooners will begin doubles competition at the WSU Fall Classic on Saturday at 9 a.m.
