NORMAN, Okla.—The University of Oklahoma women's tennis team heads to Ames, Iowa, and Lincoln, Neb., for a pair of weekend matches. The Sooners will face Iowa State on Friday, April 3 and Nebraska on Sunday, April 5.
Oklahoma (7-10 Overall, 1-5 Big 12) enters the weekend following its first conference win against Kansas State on Sunday, March 29. The Sooners beat the Wildcats, 6-1, and improved their home record to 4-1 on the season. Oklahoma is used to away matches, playing 12 of its 17 matches on the road, including eight matches against ranked opponents. Oklahoma looks to improve its conference record this weekend against Iowa State and Nebraska.
"We are very well prepared for this weekend," OU head coach David Mullins said. "All the travel we have done this year has definitely toughened us up and we now feel confident playing in unfamiliar environments."
Iowa State (8-8 Overall, 1-6 Big 12) is coming off a five-match losing streak, recently falling to Texas on March 27, and Texas A&M on March 29. Iowa State's only conference win also came against Kansas State, the Cyclones defeated the Wildcats, 4-3. The Cyclones have played eight matches against ranked opponents, including No. 4 Baylor and No. 5 Miami.
Nebraska (10-5 Overall, 2-4 Big 12) won its first 10 matches, before hitting a five-match losing streak that began on March 17. The Huskers are ranked No. 66 nationally as a team and have been ranked in the ITA top 75 for five-straight weeks.
Oklahoma owns the series advantage against both weekend opponents. The Sooners lead Iowa State, 32-1, in series history and lead Nebraska, 22-10. The Sooners have beaten Iowa State the past seven seasons, OU's only loss to the Cyclones came on April 6, 2001. Although OU leads the Nebraska series, the Sooners have fallen to the Huskers the past two years. The last time OU beat Nebraska was on April 15, 2006. The last time the Sooners beat the Huskers in Lincoln, Neb., was on April 5, 2003.
Friday's match against Iowa State will begin at 6 p.m. at the Ames Racquet and Fitness Center. The Nebraska match will begin Sunday at 11 a.m. at the Nebraska Tennis Center.
