NORMAN, Okla. -- The 38th-ranked University of Oklahoma men's tennis team (11-8, 1-4 Big 12) hosts Wichita State on Wednesday, April 15, at the Headington Family Tennis Center.

“We're coming off a pretty tough loss against Oklahoma State but I think the guys will be rested and ready to go,” OU head coach Paul Lockwood said. “Wichita State, year-in and year-out, always has tough teams that fight hard.”

OU will rely on junior Andrei Daescu, ranked No. 66 nationally, at the No. 1 position. Daescu and sophomore David Pultr combine forces in doubles action to comprise the 65th-ranked doubles team in the country. The OU duo is 12-1 on the spring season and 5-0 in Big 12 action.

The Sooners also boast the No. 42 doubles team in the nation in senior Sergey Avdeyev and sophomore Ionut Beleleu. The duo entered the rankings after upsetting OSU's 17th-ranked No. 1 doubles pairing of Nathan Byrnes and Oleksandr Nedovyesov, 8-7 (6).

Avdeyev was honored Monday as the Big 12 Player of the Week after he defeated Oklahoma State's Nathan Byrnes at No. 2 singles, rallying from a 6-7 first-set deficit to win his next two sets, 6-1, 6-4.

The match time is set for 2 p.m., with a senior ceremony set to begin before the match in honor of Avdeyev, OU's lone senior.

“Sergey is one of my favorite all-time players,” Lockwood said. “He was a walk-on four years ago and now he is captain of the team. I am awfully proud of Sergey and am going to miss him.”
