NORMAN, Okla. -- University of Oklahoma senior Sergey Avdeyev was named the Big 12 men's tennis Player of the Week, announced by the league office on Monday.

Avdeyev defeated Oklahoma State's Nathan Byrnes at No. 2 singles, rallying from a 6-7 first-set deficit to win his next two sets, 6-1, 6-4. He and fellow Sooner sophomore Ionut Beleleu upset OSU's 16th-ranked No. 1 doubles pairing of Byrnes and Oleksandr Nedovyesov, 8-7 (6).

"Sergey is most deserving of this honor," OU head coach Paul Lockwood said. "He is one of my favorite all-time players who has fought hard during his time here at OU. He is captain of the team and is playing a solid No. 2 singles and an outstanding No. 1 doubles for the team."

Avdeyev and his Sooner teammates will host Wichita State on Wednesday, April 15. Match time is set for 2 p.m., with a senior ceremony set to begin before the match in honor of Avdeyev, OU's lone senior.
