Sooners Down Toreros, 6-1

NORMAN, Okla. -- The 48th-ranked University of Oklahoma men's tennis team (7-4) defeated No. 63 San Diego (4-8), 4-3, inside the Gregg Wadley Tennis Pavilion Saturday.

"Today was a hard fought match," head coach Paul Lockwood said. "The match was closer than the score indicated."

OU began the match taking the doubles point and an early 1-0 lead. With a 1-0 lead, the Sooners continued to dominate the match, rolling through singles competition with just one loss.

Junior Blake Boswell was the first to notch a win for the Sooners. Boswell easily handled San Diego's Nils Schive 6-4, 6-0.

Sophomore Ionut Beleleu followed Boswells lead, defeating the Toreros' Nicola Bubnic 6-2, 6-4. Senior Sergey Avdeyev, who usually competes at the 2 position, played at the No. 3 position for the Sooners. The senior finalized OU's victory, defeating Chris Coetzee of San Diege 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).

Two of the final three matches went to three sets. Freshman George Chanturia was the first to secure a win in the third set, defeating Tom Wolff of San Diego 4-6, 6-1, 6-4. Sophomore David Pultr was the next Sooner to claim a victory after going three sets. Pultr defeated the Toreros' Charl Wolmarans, at the No. 2 spot, 6-2, 3-6, 7-5.

The final match came down to the No. 1 position headlined by two ranked players in OU's Andrei Daescu, No. 97, and San Diego's 81st-ranked Dean Jackson. Jackson secured the Toreros only point of the match by downing Daescu 7-6, 6-4.

Following OU's match against San Diego the Sooners depart for Montgomery, Ala., to compete in the Blue-Gray Tennis Classic. The tournament runs from March 19-22.

"It is one of the most, if not the most, outstanding invitational tournaments in the nation," Lockwood said. "We are honored and excited to go play in it. Hopefully we will be rested and ready to go."

Times and opponents will be available as soon as they are determined.
