NORMAN, Okla. -- The 41st-ranked University of Oklahoma men's tennis team (9-5, 0-1 Big 12) will host two top-15 nationally ranked Big 12 opponents this weekend, No. 14 Texas A&M on Friday, March 27, and 12th-ranked Texas on Sunday, March 29.
“It's a big weekend for the players,” OU head coach Paul Lockwood said. “They are coming off a good showing at the Blue-Gray, and we have had a good week of rest and practice.”
Oklahoma returns home to the friendly confines of the Gregg Wadley Pavilion after defeating two ranked opponents at the Blue-Gray Tennis Classic this past week in Montgomery, Ala. OU defeated No. 55 Mississippi State and 59th-ranked Hawaii after dropping its only loss to No. 23 Boise State, for an overall record of 2-1.
The Sooners look to earn their first conference win after dropping their Big 12 opener at 10th-ranked Baylor. OU's first opportunity to add to its win column comes against the Aggies (8-5, 0-0), who own a three-game winning streak, which includes wins over No. 31 LSU, 9th-ranked Illinois and No. 8 USC.
Following action against the Aggies, OU hosts the Texas Longhorns (12-3, 0-0) for a Red River Showdown. The Horns are coming off a victory over No. 33 Rice and earlier in the season they swept Texas A&M at a neutral site.
“You couldn't ask for two better opponents back-to-back, in A&M and Texas,” Lockwood said. “They are both in the top-15 at 12 and 14, but we believe if we play well and win some important three-set matches that we have a shot at beating either one of them.”
Both A&M and Texas have three players ranked in the ITA-top 125 singles. The Aggies add the third-ranked doubles duo, while Longhorns have all three doubles positions ranked in the top 60.
Friday's match begins at 6 p.m. and Sunday's match will begin at 1 p.m. Both matches will be held at the Headington Family Tennis Center. However, weather conditions could force both matches inside the Gregg Waddley Pavilion.
