NORMAN, Okla. -- The Oklahoma men's tennis team (4-2) continued their winning ways inside the Gregg Wadley Indoor Tennis Pavilion on Monday, defeating the University of Pacific (2-3) by a final tally of 6-1.

OU lost the first point of the day in doubles competition against the Tigers. The Sooners only victory came from junior Andrei Daescu and freshman George Chanturia, who defeated Pacific duo Artem Gramma and Ryan Kim, 8-5, at the No. 2 position.

“I don't think we came ready to play in the doubles and it showed,” OU head coach Paul Lockwood said. “We came out flat footed and we didn't play with much energy. Pacific really came out on fire and took the doubles point from us.”

However, the Sooners would not look back after the doubles loss, as they swept Pacific 6-0 in singles competition.

“I'm disappointed in the doubles, but I'm equally impressed with how we fought back in singles,” Lockwood said. “The silver lining in this is we bounced back in singles and controlled the action.”

Leading the way for the Sooners was senior Sergey Avdeyev who soundly defeated Gramma 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot. Daescu continued the dominating performance at the No. 1 spot, defeating Pacific's Starke 7-5, 6-2.

The Sooners kept the winning trend going at the No. 3 spot where sophomore Ionut Beleleu defeated Vegerd Veskimagi 6-4, 6-5. Freshman David Pultr's match ended quickly as he defeated Karl-Erik Paaro 6-2, 6-1.

The final two matches proved to be hard fought by both sides. At the No. 5 spot, George Chanturia won his first set 6-1, and pulled off his second set 7-5 against Tiger Christian Kuekne. Junior Blake Boswell rounded out play defeating Ryan Kim 6-2 in his first set, but losing 4-6 in the second. Boswell claimed the victory winning the super tiebreaker set 10-3.

Oklahoma will now go on a four match road trip, beginning with a stop in Fayetteville, Ark., Friday, Feb. 20 to take on the No. 47-ranked Razorbacks.

“Arkansas is a tough team,” Lockwood said. “It is going to be a dogfight. Hopefully we will be ready to play.”

The Sooners will be back at home on March 7, when they host San Diego.
