Sooner Duo Advances to Quarterfinals

NORMAN, Okla.-- OU doubles tandem Ana-Maria Constantinescu and Teona Tsertsvadze won in the first round at the 2009 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Tennis Championships Thursday and will advance to the doubles quarterfinals.
Six other members of the OU tennis team will head to San Diego for the San Diego State Invitational. The Sooners will play one round of doubles and singles Friday morning.
Constantinescu and Tsertsvadze defeated Vanderbilt's Erica Robertson and Heather Steinbauer in the first round, 8-3.
“Teona and Ana continued their solid doubles play from regionals,” OU head coach David Mullins said. “They were very disciplined and executed at a very high level.”
The Sooner duo will play Lindsay Burdette and Hilary Barte of Stanford, ranked No. 3 nationally, in the doubles quarterfinals on Friday at 8 a.m. EST.
No. 71 Constantinescu fell in the singles first round in the tiebreaker set, losing to No. 47 Pichittra Thongdach of Boise State, 4-6, 6-0, 6-3.
“Ana ran into a very hot opponent today and really got overpowered, which is rare for her,” Mullins said. “We did not have a lot of options and all the credit goes to the Boise State player.”
Constantinescu will play in singles consolation on Friday morning.
