NORMAN, Okla.— University of Oklahoma women's tennis junior Ana-Maria Constantinescu and freshman Teona Tsertsvadze head to New Haven, Conn., to compete in the 2009 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships Nov. 5-8.
Constantinescu will compete in Main Draw singles that features 32 of the nation's top collegiate tennis players and will partner with Tsertsvadze to face 15 doubles pairs in Main Draw doubles.
“The quality of tennis at the National Indoors will be outstanding this weekend,” OU head coach David Mullins said. “The criteria for reaching this event is extremely selective and every match will be very competitive.”
Constantinescu and Tsertsvadze qualified for the national tournament after winning a combined 11 matches in four days to claim the Wilson/ITA Central Region singles and doubles championships in Norman on Oct. 25.
The event marks Constantinescu's second career appearance at the ITA National Indoors. Constantinescu lost in the second round of the national tournament in 2007 as a freshman after qualifying as a Central Region finalist.
“Ana definitely knows the type of competition she will be facing,” Mullins said. “Her experiences out in California last month have prepared her for the level of play she will face in the next few days.”
In four tournaments this fall Constantinescu holds a 12-4 singles record, with all four losses coming to nationally-ranked opponents.
The tournament will be the first national tournament appearance for freshman Tsertsvadze who already has two tournament titles for the fall season. Tsertsvadze won the Wichita State Fall Classic Singles Flight B Title on Sept. 20 before winning the Central Regional Doubles Championship with Constantinescu.
“It will be a very good experience for Teona to see the highest levels of college tennis in her freshman year,” Mullins said. “I have no doubt she can compete at this level and hopefully she will aspire to be playing in National tournaments in the years ahead.”
The 2009 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships will begin with the singles first round on Thursday, Oct. 5 at 9 a.m. EST.
