Men's Tennis Sweeps Opener

OKLAHOMA CITY - The Oklahoma men's tennis team completed its season opener with a 7-0 sweep of the University of Texas-Pan American at Quail Creek Golf and Country Club in Oklahoma City.  

"I am very pleased with our performance," OU head coach Paul Lockwood said. "You never know what you're going to see in the opening match."  

The Sooners began the dual with doubles competition. Junior Andrei Daescu teamed with freshman David Pultr to defeat Nirvick Mohinta and Ashwin Vijayaragavan of UTPA, 8-4, at the No. 1 spot.   

Senior Sergey Avdeyev paired with junior Blake Boswell at the No. 2 position, defeating Beau Bernstein and Andrew Irving, 8-4.  

Sophomore Ionut Beleleu and freshman George Chanturia joined forces to shutout Abdelhamid Riani and Shashank Vij, 8-0.  

"Our guys fought hard and competed well," Lockwood said.  

The Sooners continued to role in singles competition with Daescu defeating Vijararagavan, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 1 spot. Avdeyev represented Oklahoma at the No. 2 spot defeating Mohinta, 6-3, 6-1. Competing in the No. 3 spot for the Sooners was Beleleu, who defeated Bernshein, 6-2, 6-2. At the No. 4 spot Chenturia defeated Vig, 6-1, 6-1. Boswell rounded out singles play with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Riani.   

Oklahoma will host Oral Roberts University Sunday, Feb. 1. The match will be held at either the Greens Country Club or the new Sooner Tennis complex, the Gregg Wadley Pavillion.
