NORMAN, Okla.--The University of Oklahoma women's tennis team opens its spring season Saturday, Jan. 24 against Texas-Pan American at the Oklahoma City Golf and Country Club at 6 p.m.
The head-to-head dual will provide a couple of firsts for OU. Saturday will be the Sooners' first dual match with new head coach David Mullins, the 2008 ITA Assistant Coach of the Year, and also marks the first time in program history that OU has faced the UTPA Lady Broncs.
"I am very excited for the season opener with Texas-Pan American," Mullins said. "Not only is it my first match as head coach at the University of Oklahoma but it is also my first chance to see our players in a dual match format."
Leading the way will be sophomore Ana-Maria Constantinescu, who is ranked in the ITA spring preseason top 125 singles players and ranked No. 6 in the ITA Central Region. Following her freshman campaign Constantinescu was named ITA Central Region Rookie of the Year along with being named to the All-Big 12 team.
The dual is the first of six home matches for OU. The Sooners face a busy road schedule before returning home to the Headington Family Tennis Center on March 8.
"We have a very tough road schedule this season, so we hope to take full advantage of playing close to home with a lot of fans and family." Mullins said.
OU hopes to build on its fall season's progress throughout the spring season. During fall tournaments the Sooners faced players from 12 different teams that were ranked in the ITA top 75.
Doubles competition will begin at 6 p.m. with singles matches to follow.
