Sooners Advance in Fayetteville

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The University of Oklahoma women's tennis team began the fall with success in both singles and doubles action at the Razorback Classic Friday afternoon.

The Sooners won four singles matches on Friday, with sophomores Ana-Maria Constantinescu and Tara Eckel and newcomers Peta Maree Lancaster and Marie Pier Huet advancing to the semi-finals of the singles draw.

Maria Kalashnikova, Kristina Radan, Kristin Gray and Brittany Baldy were all defeated in the singles first round with Kalashnikova falling to the No. 1 nationally ranked Aurelija Miseviciute.

In doubles action, the Sooners captured three wins in the first round and another victory in the second round. Constantinescu and Radan teamed up to defeat Antea Huljev and Mariya Slupska from Kansas State, 8-6, in the first round and Rebecca Row and Ewa Szatkowska from Tulsa, 8-5, in the second round. The duo will advance to the final round that begins Saturday morning.

Two OU pairs, Eckel and Lancaster and Pier-Huet and Kalashnikova, were defeated in the doubles semifinals after claiming victories in the first round.

“I was very pleased with the team today, we competed extremely hard, and got a little better as the day went on,” OU head coach Dave Mullins said.

The Razorback Classic continues Saturday, Sept. 13, with the final doubles round and singles semifinals round beginning at 9 a.m. CST.
