NORMAN, Okla. - Following a successful 2007-08 campaign that saw OU capture three tournament titles and make its first NCAA regional appearance in four years, members of the Sooner women's golf squad are making a name for themselves on the national stage this summer.
Ellen Mueller (Bartlesville, Okla.) started the summer with a dramatic upset of top-seeded Lizette Salas (2 & 1) in the first round of match play at the 32nd U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship. The sophomore-to-be endured an eight-way playoff for one of seven spots that advanced to match play, where Mueller advanced to the round of 32 with the upset of Salas, before falling to Michelle Shin, who reached the quarterfinals.
Mueller will join senior Kendall Dye (Edmond, Okla.) at the 2008 U.S. Women's Amateur, held Aug. 4-10, in Eugene, Ore. Dye was one of seven golfers to advance from sectional qualifying in Mission Hills, Kan., carding the second-lowest round at the site (72), while Mueller fired a 76 at Broadmoor Country Club in Indianapolis, Ind., to snag one of five qualifying spots into the U.S. Women's Amateur.
The U.S. Women's Amateur, the third oldest of the USGA championships, was first played in 1895 at Meadowbrook Club in Hempstead, N.Y. The event is open to any female amateur who has a USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 5.4.

Dye recently returned from North Carolina where she competed in the 106th Women's North & South Amateur, held at the famed Pinehurst Resort. The Edmond, Okla., native carded rounds of 76-72 in the stroke play portion of the event, earning the 12-seed in the 64-player match-play format. Dye prevailed in the first round of match play in a grueling 23-hole defeat of Yu Lee (Staten Island, NY), before falling in the round of 32.
The Sooner duo will be joined by junior Andrea Sellmeyer as the three compete in the Women's Oklahoma Golf Association Stroke Play Championship in Ponca City, Okla., on July 28-29, before Dye and Mueller travel to Eugene, Ore., for the U.S. Women's Amateur.
