NORMAN, Okla. -- First-year University of Oklahoma head women's tennis coach David Mullins announced the hiring of Brook Buck-Connelly as assistant coach Wednesday.
Buck-Connelly, a Yukon, Okla., native, joins the Sooners in her first coaching assignment after a stellar playing career at Notre Dame. Named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) Senior Player of the Year for the Midwest Region, Buck-Connelly served as team captain for the Fighting Irish last season. She also received the ITA Sportsmanship Award for displaying outstanding sportsmanship and exemplifying the spirit of college tennis.
“We are very fortunate to have Brook join the OU tennis staff,” Mullins said. “She just wrapped up a tremendous collegiate career. All the outstanding qualities she displayed as a player will help her make the transition to her role at OU.
“Being from Oklahoma, Brook's obviously very passionate about OU Athletics and excited about making OU tennis one of the top teams in the nation.”
Teamed with fellow Oklahoman Kelcy Tefft, Buck-Connelly earned All-America honors in doubles last season following an NCAA semifinals appearance, the best finish by a duo in Notre Dame women's tennis history. The duo also claimed the ITA National Indoor Doubles Championship title in November 2007.
“I'm definitely up for the challenge and eager to begin a coaching career back home in Oklahoma,” Buck-Connelly said. “I'm committed to helping the OU tennis program reach its potential. With the new facilities and the hiring of David Mullins as head coach, I believe this program is capable of becoming a national power.”
Buck-Connelly was a four-time state champion in No. 1 singles during her prep career at Oklahoma Christian School and partnered with Tefft to win five United States Tennis Association (USTA) national doubles titles in the junior ranks.
In 2002, Buck-Connelly held the USTA's national No. 1 ranking in 16-and-under singles and doubles.
The OU women's tennis team returns eight members, including All-Big 12 selection and ITA Central Region Rookie Player of the Year Ana-Maria Constantinescu, from its 2008 squad that finished ninth in the Big 12 Conference standings and compiled an 11-12 overall record.
