NORMAN, Okla. - Freshman Ana-Maria Constantinescu earned a spot on the women's tennis All-Big 12 team Monday, making her the first women's tennis player to earn Big 12 honors since former Sooner Gabby Baker in 2006.
"I am very proud of the season she had," former head coach Mark Johnson said. "This is an honor that she really deserves. She had a standout freshman season both on and off the courts."
Constantinescu was among three freshmen to earn a spot on the 12 member team.
"This is truly an honor for me," Constantinescu said. "It really gives me a lot of confidence and motivation to do even better next year."
The award comes as Constantinescu's second this season. The Romania native was given the University of Oklahoma Jay Meyers Award at the scholar athlete breakfast on April 15. The award is given to freshmen athletes who best combine excellence in scholarship, with potential excellence in their sport.
"I am pleased with how my freshman year went, even though I didn't accomplish my main goal of making the NCAA tournament," Constantinescu said.
Constantinescu is the 16th player to earn Big 12 honors under head coach Mark Johnson, who just completed his 20th season at the University of Oklahoma.
