STILLWATER, Okla. - On a day that saw just 12 individuals break 80, the No. 41 Oklahoma Sooners posted a team score of 335 (+47) to stand in a tie for ninth place with Kansas State through 18 holes of the Big 12 Women's Golf Championship at 6,210-yard, par-72 Karsten Creek. OU is just one stroke behind eighth-place Texas Tech, two shots behind seventh place Kansas, and four back of Iowa State for sixth place.

"I think overall, our girls made pretty good adjustments as far as the wind changing from yesterday's practice round," OU head coach Carol Ludvigson said. "We had a lot of big holes, and that was our problem. When we got into trouble, we made doubles and triples instead of bogeys. We had way too many triples. I think a lot of that is just trying to force things instead of playing the smart shot and taking a bogey, taking your medicine and moving on."

Senior Heather Wright led the Sooners on day one with an opening-round 82 (+10). She sits in a tie for 23rd place, only eight shots behind leader Jaclyn Sweeney of Oklahoma State. On a course where rounds in the 70s are difficult to come by, that is well within range of contention with 36 holes still to play. Wright fired a 39 on her final nine holes after posting a 43 on the first nine. OU started on hole No. 10, playing the back nine first.

Kendall Dye and senior Kelly Jacques carded twin 84s (+12) to place them tied for 33rd place through 18 holes. Jacques started with a 44 on the back nine and finished with a 40 on the front. Dye was just the opposite at 40-44. The junior from Edmond, Okla., played the first 15 holes four-over-par, but was +8 on the final three holes.

Freshman Ellen Mueller follows close behind her teammates at tied for 39th place. She posted an 85 (+13), a round that featured OU's only birdie of the day, a 2 at the par-3 11th hole. Sophomore Ryanne Elmer rounded out the Sooner scoring with a first-round 97 (+25). She sits in 60th place.

Golfstat Live Scoring

"Overall, we were pretty good off the fairway, but not so smart into the greens and looking at the pin placements," Coach Ludvigson said. "Decision making and getting the speed of the greens will be the key for tomorrow."

Host Oklahoma State leads the tournament at 303 (+15). The Cowgirls lead second-place Texas A&M by 12 strokes.

"We are looking for all five girls to step up tomorrow," Ludvigson said. "I told them that this is the type of golf course that, as a team we can easily (looking at the scores today) make up a 30-shot swing. That tells you that each player should make at least a five to eight shot swing, which is do-able. That's the way that we're going to be thinking going into tomorrow. Knowing the good things that we did today, learning from the mistakes that we made, and taking advantage of that."

The second round of the Big 12 Championship begins at 9 a.m. CDT tomorrow, with OU starting at 9:50 on the back nine.
