Women's Tennis Defeats #64 Tech

LUBBOCK, Texas - The University of Oklahoma (10-9, 3-5) knocked off No. 64 Texas Tech 5-2 Sunday.

In doubles action, the Sooners fell at the No. 1 and 3 positions which gave Tech an early 1-0 lead.

Senior Christi Baxley and freshman Maria Kalashnikova earned OU its lone win at the No. 2 spot. In a close match, that was the last off the courts, the duo defeated Kerryn Potgieter and Brenna Jackson 8-7.

"I'm disappointed we didn't play better in doubles," OU head coach Mark Johnson said. "The doubles point is big."

Oklahoma bounced back in singles play winning five of six spots.

At the No. 2 position senior Chelsea Orr quickly defeated Kelsy Garland, 6-2, 6-3. The Sooner victory tied the score 1-all.

Freshman Tara Eckel gave OU its first lead of the match. The Dallas, Texas native was the second off the court after defeating Lady Raider Laura Ring 6-1, 6-3 and making the score 2-1.

At the No. 3 position Kalashnikova fell 6-0 in the first set to Tech's Janet Durham. The Tilbsi, Georgia native than rallied back in the second set defeating the Red Raider 6-2. The freshman than closed the third set with a 6-2 win.

"I'm very pleased with how we bounced back in singles play," Johnson said. "The girls really fought hard."

The Sooners will return home for their final three regular season matches. They will return to the courts Wednesday, April 16 to host Bedlam at 2 p.m.
