NORMAN, Okla. -- University of Oklahoma head women's tennis coach David Mullins announced the signing of one of the state's top seniors on the first day of the NCAA's early signing period Wednesday.
Katelyn Connelly, from Bishop McGuiness High School in Oklahoma City, signed a National Letter of Intent to compete for the Sooners beginning with the 2009-10 season.
Connelly was rated by TennisRecruiting.net as the No. 2 high school senior in Oklahoma and among the top 150 in the nation.
"Katelyn was one of the first players I saw play when I accepted the job at OU," Mullins said. "It was very obvious that she would be a wonderful fit for the direction the program is going. She brings a great work ethic and attitude and will be a leader on this team for years to come. We are very excited to start working with her next fall."
Connelly has won two Class 3A state championships, claiming the 2008 No. 2 singles title and 2007 No. 1 singles crown.
The Sooner recruit was also named the 2007All-City Player of the Year by The Oklahoman.
Connelly has also had success in individual tournaments under private coaches Tim Ritchie and Joe Moss. Connelly was named to the 2008 Missouri Valley Federal Cup Team and methodically worked her way up the rankings to No. 7 in the region. Connelly placed ninth in singles at the June Missouri Valley Sweet Sixteen and first in doubles, with partner Meredith Burns.
Connelly heads to Oklahoma in familiar territory. Connelly partnered with current OU tennis player Peta Maree Lancaster in numerous doubles tournaments in 2007 and is also the sister-in-law of OU assistant coach Brook Connelly.
Tennis runs deep in the Connelly family. Her mother, Vicki, is the head coach at Bishop McGuiness and all four of Katelyn's siblings won an Oklahoma high school state championship.
